Counter Strike Global Offensive

The hardcore FPS series is coming back to our screens at the end of the month with the new and improved Counter-Strike Global Offensive. Valve have decided for a multi platform release with the game being available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 from day one and is expecting the trademark game play to shine through. Some of you may not know about the Counter-Strike series but for years Valve’s ultra fast shooter has been top of the pile on the PC. It’s been 8 years since the release of the last version, Counter-Strike Source, and this new game looks to build on the legacy.

CS:GO uses the same engine as the previous Counter-Strike game but it is heavily modified to a point where it is almost impossible to tell. The visuals look smooth and slick with the action being just as fast and furious as before. The format of the game is similar to long term fans of the series with the added bonus of Arms Race mode. Arms race used to be known as Gun Game mode but it was a modification on PC rather than a legitimate game mode. This will please fans of the series as Gun Game was a popular match with a large number of regular casual players.

Another nice addition is the inclusion of everyone’s favourite throwing weapon the Molotov cocktail. This will cover an area of the map in fire for a short period of time which will prove invaluable for defending tight spots and causing chaos amongst the enemy ranks. The MP7 also makes an appearance as a new weapon which will entice players to get into the close range action. As a avid CS:S player, I can’t wait for this release. CS:GO is coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on the 21st of August on Steam, Xbox Live Arcade and PSN Store.

Datuk Punch Gunalan dies at 68

Badminton legend Datuk Punch Gunalan passed away peacefully at 6am Wednesday. He was 68.
Gunalan had been battling with liver cancer for some time.
He had put Malaysia on the world's map in the 1970s with his immaculate performances in the singles and doubles events - representing the country in the Thomas Cup, All-England and Asian Games.
He had also served with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and Badminton World Federation (BWF), earning the respect of the world for his excellent administrative and communication skills and also for his warmth, kindness and passion for the sport.

Born in 1944 in Sepang, Selangor, Gunalan was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia Hall of Fame in 2004.
While Malaysians were overwhelmed in 1970 for losing the Thomas Cup, Gunalan defeated Indonesian legends Injartno and Mirjati in his doubles title game with partner Ng Boon Bee to regain Malaysia back in the world of badminton. Despite losing 2-7 to Indonesia at the championship, Gunalan's victory is something that we can still be proud of.
Gunalan had made a successful career in his life. A talented right-hander, he was indeed among the finest combination doubles Malaysia has ever produced. In 1971, Gunalan and Boon Bee again became the top men's doubles team in the world, winning the prestigious All England title, as well as the Canadian, Danish and U.S Open titles. His gifted right-hand amazed people with his exiting smash.
After his retirement, Gunalan continued his career by coaching the Malaysian team (Badminton Association of Malaysia) and later being appointed as the Deputy President of the International Badminton Federation. Under his reign, he vowed to make badminton as the best racquet sport in the world.
His continuous contributions and tremendous achievements in the badminton arena shall always be an inspiration for our young shuttlers.

Diablo III Now Free to Play

Late last night, Blizzard announced on their Battle.net website a new, free-to-play edition of Diablo III. Called the Diablo III Starter Edition, it is totally free for users to download and play with an existing or new Battle.net account.

Of course, with all things free, there is a catch. The Starter Edition only allows users to play until the Skeleton King boss in Act I (or, in other words, the beta version of Diablo III) and advance until level 13. Also, Starter Edition players will not be able to access the Auction House. However, Global Play is available, and matchmaking is also available (albeit only with other Starter Edition players).

Essentially, the Starter Edition is a Guest Pass for those without Guest Passes.

Open Deck Base Jump

The world’s most extreme sporting event – the KL Tower BASE Jump 2012 – is back in Malaysia this September 27th – 30th, at Menara Kuala Lumpur! For those of you who are still unfamiliar with this event, it is the only official BASE Jump event in the world.

More than 100 international BASE jumpers will be showcasing thrilling acts for the visitors of Menara Kuala Lumpur. Professionals from 20 countries gathered for the opportunity to hurl themselves into the sky before parachuting down to earth during the event.

Come and watch these daredevils take the dive from the top of KL Tower. Let’s just hope they don't forget the chute. This event has become a 'must attend' sports meet for the top names in the world of B.A.S.E (Building, Antenna, Span and Earth) Jumping and Skydiving.

Once again, Menara Kuala Lumpur is offering exclusive tickets to the Open Deck in conjunction with the jump. I love everything about this sport as it is fun experience not to be missed to watch the jumpers prepare themselves for their jump off the top of one of the tallest towers in the world.

Security Breach at Blizzard

To all Battle.net account holders, now might be a good time to change your account password. In a post from the Blizzard website, Blizzard President Mike Morhaine said that a network breach was detected this week.

However, Blizzard found no evidence to suggest that user account information has been compromised, although a list of email addresses for global Battle.net users excluding China was accessed.  In addition, the answer to the personal security question and information relating to Mobile and Dial-In Authenticators were also accessed. Finally, “cryptographically scrambled versions” of Battle.net passwords (not actual passwords) for players on North American (which includes Malaysian players) servers were taken.

However, unlike the lax security measures taken by both Amazon and Apple, the information that were accessed are not enough for hackers to gain access to individual accounts. Blizzard uses Secure Remote Password protocol (SRP) to protect these passwords, which is designed to “make it extremely difficult to extract the actual password, and also means that each password would have to be deciphered individually”.
Therefore, while there is a high chance that these Battle.net accounts might not be hacked into, some preventive measures such as changing your account passwords will eliminate the chances of your account being hacked completely.

Indestructible Nokia

The Nokia 3310 has been the centre of an "indestructible" internet meme for quite some time. This was due to the nature of the 3310's hihgly superior build quality, especially when compared to our current fragile smartphones. Of course, some of the references are pretty exaggerated, such as the one with a bullet-proof vest made up of Nokia 3310s.
However, came the news that someone who was recording an incident on the Syrian civil war had his life saved when his Nokia X2 phone stopped a stray bullet that was heading to his path. Incredibly, the bullet did not pierce the phone, but instead stopped dead inside the phone. Also, the battery did not explode, even though the bullet bore a hole right through it!

Of course, other phones might be just as capable of stopping bullets, or this could all be an elaborate hoax. Either way, we'll leave it to you to judge.
